Worst Films I Watched in 2021

As I said in my last blog, last year I challenged myself to watch 80 films I hadn't seen before and I actually managed to watch 90. To read my favourite films I watched for the first time last year, refer to my last blog but if you're here to listen to me talk about some of the most awful films I watched last year then...Welcome!

I want to add a disclaimer before I start. I hate to bash films because, regardless of the budget and end product, a lot of work would have been put into making these films. However in my personal opinion I really didn't enjoy these films for one reason or another. If you did, that's brilliant, unfortunately I really did not.

In no particular order, here are the films I watched for the first time last year and didn't enjoy.

The Little Stranger (2018)

When reading through my list of films I'd watched last year I'd actually forgotten all about this because it left very little impact on me.

The film follows a doctor who has been assigned to look after an ill patient in 1948. He begins to experience strange happenings in the house that lead him to believe it's haunted.

This film was so boring. Nothing really happened. The pacing was slow and despite the extraordinary cast (Domhnall Gleeson and Ruth Wilson) I was left under whelmed. One of my biggest hates in horror films is when they try to be metaphorical with the spirit/entity and this was one of those films. I had to look up the films synopsis afterwards because I just didn't understand what was going on. If you have to look up a film to understand the ending then the writing hasn't done it's job. It was very disappointing.

Wishmaster (1997)

I know 90's special affects are somewhat...well , rubbish but this films affects were so bad it was laughable.

Wishmaster is about an evil jinn that grants people up to 3 wishes but there is always a nasty twist to their wishes.

It's filled with horror film legends like Robert Englund and Tony Todd but this film was appalling. It wasn't scary. The script was so cheesy it was cringey and while I could laugh at it I spent a lot of time waiting for it to be over.

Abducted (2007)

The premise of this film sounded good in the synopsis but when my mum, step-dad and I started watching it it was one of the worst things I've ever seen.

It's about a woman whose husband is a prison warden and she finds herself attracted to one of the prisoners. When he finally escapes custody she goes with him as a hostage but she finds everything isn't as black and white as she thought.

All I can say is it was clear it was shot for TV from the start to the point I thought it was a porn film for a split second. Visually it was just jarring and rubbish. The acting was wooden and the script was boring and predictable. We managed to finish it but I was told I wasn't allowed to pick films again THAT'S how bad it was.

Things Heard and Seen (2021)

This was a horror film that started very strong and was beautifully shot but then faltered in the second half.

It's a typical horror story of a husband and wife who move to a new town. The wife begins to think her home is haunted.

It, unfortunately, fell short when it tried to be too deep. There was a lot of links to old art which could have been interesting but the way they ended the film left me sitting there going 'What the heck was that?' I was really great to see Amanda Seyfried in a darker role but ultimately the script let this film down not the quality of the acting.

Voice from the Stone (2017)

This is one of the worst films I have ever seen in my life.

It takes place during post-World War II Italy. A woman moves to an isolated castle in Tuscany to becomes a new tutor for a young boy who hasn't spoken since his mother passed away. The longer she stays there the more she thinks he has come under the spell of something powerful hidden in the walls of the castle.

Nothing happens. It's so flat and not even the magnificent Emilia Clarke can save it. It just sort of goes along with some things happening but nothing eventful enough to keep you invested. While I quite liked the final shot that's the only thing I did like. It was predictable but so dull. I can feel myself trying to write some positive things about it but I know my boyfriend and I came away from watching it feeling like we'd just wasted an hour and a half.
